What does a sheet metal worker do?
Sheet metal workers are involved with the applications of all types of sheet metal. Job opportunities are diverse and include fabrication, installation, and maintenance of heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems, as well as gutters, roofing, siding, or food service equipment. Architectural sheet metal workers fabricate and install metal ornamentation, columns, skylights, signs, and metal ceilings that add beauty to commercial and residential buildings.
Type of work:
- Architectural Sheet Metal—makes metal ornamentation, columns, skylights, signs, metal ceilings, and downspouts
- Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning—design, fabricate and install.
- Testing, Adjusting and Balancing—fine tuning and maintaining HVAC components.
- Use of computers—to fabricate sheet metal products and troubleshoot HVAC systems.
- Health, Safety, and Environmental training.
- Food and Beverage—Stainless steel fabrication and installation in restaurants, cafeterias, etc.
- Welding—fusing different types of metal using the latest technological processes.
- Service Work—installing, maintaining and repair of equipment that conditions air.
- Siding and decking—rigging and installation of building components relating to floors and walls.

Basic Qualifications
- Age - 18 years of age (Proof of age required)
- Applicant must be able to perform essential job functions of the trade, with due regard to aptitude, attitude, personal characteristics, and shall be subject to a medical examination and a urinalysis test for drugs prior to being employed. Any applicant who has a positive urinalysis test, or who refuses to take such a test, will not be admitted. The Apprenticeship Fund will pay for the cost of the urinalysis and physical.
- Must live in the jurisdiction of the Apprentice and Journeyman Training Fund of Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #2.
- Kansas City applicants must live in one of the following counties to be eligible for our program:
- Missouri: Barton, Bates, Benton, Caldwell, Camden, Carroll, Cass, Chariton, Clay, Davies, Grundy, Harrison, Henry, Hickory, Howard, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Linn, Livingston, Mercer, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan, Pettis, Platte, Ray, Saline, St. Clair, Vernon
- Kansas: Allen, Anderson, Atchison, Bourbon, Cherokee, Coffey, Crawford, Douglas, Franklin, Jefferson, Johnson, Labette, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami, Montgomery, Neosho, Wilson, Woodson, Wyandotte
- All applicants will be subject to an exam administered by the Business and Technology Center. The test will be over the following:
- Numerical Skills-designed to assess basic numerical skills in performance of operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and basic word problems involving arithmetic.
- Elementary Algebra-designed to assess skills commonly acquired in the first high school algebra course.
- Reading Skills-measures reading comprehension.
- Spatial Relations-measures the ability to visualize a three dimensional object from a two dimensional pattern, and visualize how this product would look if rotated in space.
- Mechanical Aptitude-paper and pencil test that measures the ability to understand the basic mechanical principals of machinery, tools, and motion
The time required for an applicant to complete all of these tests listed above is approximately 3 hours.
No calculators allowed during the test.
All applicants must have a photo ID at the time of testing. (No Exceptions)
